Wow, this is super cool! I'd never seen this thread before!

I managed to see this working (for at least 10 seconds) in Adobe Photoshop 6.0 [in case you were wondering if works in 6.0]

I don't see a plugins directory for PSP 7.0 though - where do I need to put *.8bf pluging file for it?

I'm going to go play with it some more.... :)

I use PSP v7 mostly... (yes I know it's old as the hills, but I'm really used to it). These are the instructions I got from Wolfie on the plugins folders:

PSP supports multiple plugin folders. One is in the same folder you installed PSP in. I rarely put anything new in there. I have an external plugin folder that I point multiple programs to. You can define the folders for PSP to use by going to File-Preferences-File Locations menu. Click the plugins tab and you can define up to 3 plugin folders for PSP to load from. The first one should be the folder inside your PSP folder.

And yes, I have used this cool little plugin a few times since I got it. It's not exactly an "instant pattern" maker, but it can get you to the 3 color stage in a real hurry, and then it's just touch ups and detail work from there. :thumleft: :thumleft: :thumleft:

this is the first time I've used this plugin and I really like it. So far, the one thing I'd like to see changed is to have a preview box to check so that I could see a preview on the original image in photoshop. Like everything else, I've noticed some pictures are harder for this plugin than others. This will need a big pumpkin.

I'm posting a pattern I made in 2005 which didn't work very well.
Image

This is the pattern made by the plugin. It needs some handwork, specially the creature's hands. Many of the details are so much better in this one and the rocks now look like rocks.

I'm posting these compressed, but a little large so detail can be seen. If these are too big, just let me know and I'll fix it.

I thank everyone for their good props. Its very much appreciated. I have ONLY posted this plugin here on this site as one way I can give back to those who have provided me with so many patterns, so much help and fantastic tips. That is why I have only posted it here, its not even on my own site. If you like this board and its people, consider a subscription here.

It, as you might have guessed, is not and never was meant to be an instant pattern maker. I meant it to be simply another tool you can use to make patterns. No matter how good software gets, you can't take the artist out of the process but you can give that artist a better brush.

In most programs, the posterize effect has very few, if any, controls other than number of colors. Thats why this plugin started and has center and width slider set as well as a color set to control the posterize filter.

Also, in most programs, there isn't a good brightness/contrast control filter, this is why this filter has a 6 band brightness "equalizer". You can boost or reduce any of the 6 bands to achieve a pretty wide range of adjustment possibilities.

The sample blur is pretty simple (gaussean blur) and nothing special but its here.

And the last "feature" is all three filtering options (blur, equalizer, and poserizer) are on a single control panel for you to play with. This should help eliminate some of the do/undo cycles as you can adjust things all in one place and get a pretty good idea of how they interact with each other.

I've been using this plugin now - it's awesome!!

I love how easy it makes it to tweak the image in order to reduce the number of colours in it.

Great job! Very handy!

Ok, what free program can I download to then download this plug-in and use? Funds being tight, but I want to use your handy work.

Thanks!

I think Griff is asking about what free paint program can use the plugin. As far as I know, only Paintshop Pro and Photoshop can use it, so sorry but no freebies. Although I still think you can get a free trial version of PSP....

Wiz is correct, but I need to free up hard drive space as well. I hate split hard drives. I'm not good at where to install programs.

It should, check out this link for running PS plugins in Gimp (I don't use gimp so I have not personally tried this but it looks promising):
